Yeah, Timbber is right, there are lots of criteria. For example, I've made a design for ininja.org - it's not the ideal one, but still pretty good.
Pay attention to the functional and the color selection, it looks as a harmony. The animation is smooth and attractive. The main page is not too much loaded with text and images, thus guest is comfortable to browse it.

There are so many things that we need to check in a website But the main thing is that how Seo friendly it is. You should also take care about it's mobile version that it is mobile compatible or not. The simple design with all kind of information that a visitor can access is perfect you can add some designs to make it looks better.
