Can you beat a site with Sitelinks?

When Google shows a website in the number 1 spot for certain keywords with sitelinks shown underneath to other pages on the same site, is it possible that another site can take over this number 1 place and have the sitelinks itself? Or once a site has sitelinks there is pretty much no way to...
