Few Questions On .co Domains

So forgive the ignorance, however, couple questions on .co domains. First, why are they so expensive to register compared to a .com .net ect? Second, if the domain I am wanting is taken in all the other extensions, is a .co domain worthwhile to get? Thanks in advance for your assistance.
