Large price gap in "known" and "unknown" providers

I notice hostgator, liquidweb etc all have dedicated servers for $150+ per month, and many small, unknown companies have similar solutions for $40 a...

The difference from those small companies is that they are not stable. It's also difficult to sustained a company financially by having a dedicated server only for $40. I think that it would just spell disaster.
